Origin Coffee, Southwark

A multifaceted London hub for Origin, serving as a brand showcase with a front of house cafe and further technical, staff and training spaces that support wholesale activities.

Working with Origin Coffee for over a decade we conceived a unique collection of individual cafes through a series of diverse settings – from the British Library to an old aircraft factory to spaces in the heart of Shoreditch and Southwark much loved by their community.

Southwark was the culmination of this work as a flagship store in London that enabled them to service and play host to their close-knit community of customers and clients.

In its simplest form, we were briefed to create a great place to hang out, drink exceptional coffee and enjoy nourishing food. A space that reflected the unique culture, community and product created by Origin Coffee.

Operationally we had to aim for efficiency with competing activities within one space. The layout is intentional encouraging interactions with baristas at the unique La Marzocco Mod Bar, presenting retail opportunities and ensuring take-out could be efficiently processed avoiding bottlenecks.

We took the opportunity to reflect the craft and community that goes with specialty coffee in our choice of materials and the design features. Central to the space was a bespoke community table and further settings that could flex depending on solo or group customer profiles. Materials were chosen that would add texture, with the addition of artwork, planting and lighting humanising the scale of the space and creating intimacy for cafe customers.

And finally to comply with the requirements of the lease and for circularity all fixtures and fittings were removable. We designed a unique internal framework to support lighting and HVAC so as not to interfere with the structure of the arch.
